Backbone PLM alternatives for fashion brands
Backbone PLM was a popular choice for small fashion brands. Since Bamboo Rose bought it, many of its users are asking where the product is going and what else is out there. This page covers both.
What happened to Backbone
Bamboo Rose, a retail product development and sourcing platform from Boston, bought Backbone PLM in March 2023. Since then Bamboo Rose has put its own platform, TotalPLM, at the front, and in 2024 at least one Backbone customer moved over to it. We have not found a public notice that Backbone is closing. Capterra still lists Backbone from $199 per user per month.
If you run on Backbone today, the practical questions are what your next renewal will cost, what the roadmap is, and how easily you can get your data out.

Moving from Backbone to Tr3e
- Export your styles and materials from Backbone, for example as spreadsheets.
- Create your Workspace and fill in its currency, sizes and codes. See Get started with Tr3e.
- Add materials, suppliers and certificates to the Library once.
- Create the current collection with its products, colours and sizes, and add each variant's materials and manufacturing to see live cost.
- Invite the team and suppliers. Viewers and suppliers are free.
Most teams start with the season they are working on now and leave older seasons in their archive.
